UK Income Tax for 2008/2009 tax changes
What's with the 2p cut in 2008/2009?
For the tax year 2008/2009, the basic rate of UK tax has been cut by 2p in the pound, bring it down from 22% to 20%
However, the lower rate tax bracket of 10% has been abolished, meaning that the 2p tax cut isn't worth as much as it first appears
Below is a table showing the last few years monthly take home pay (including National Insurance) for salaries of between £10,000 and £60,000 a year. As you'll see, the abolishment of the 10% tax bracket means you'll be better off unless you earn a low wage.
Update, May 13 2008: The Chancellor announced today that the tax free personal allowance will be increased by £600 for the current tax year (2008 / 2009). (see this news story) This table now takes the change into account.
